SHOW REPORT
This play has been around for two hundred and forty-one years. Originally written by Richard Brinsley Sheridan, adapted 36 years ago by Alan Ayckbourn and now adapted by Barry Syder for Lights and Bushels and Billingshurst Dramatic Society. This is a “new” show for me and I was completely entrhalled for two hours plus by this farce. Like all farces, I believe, it has to have a opening that grabs your attention, an accelerating storyline throughout leading to a clever and satisfying ending. The production had all this and more.
Writer and director, Barry Syder, also played the part of Colonel Townly and assistant director Kathryn Attwood played Norris (the bride’s maid). All the characters were very well cast, thoroughly believable, well acted and I could hear every single word that was spoken. I hesitate before I mention any individual characters but I will however write about two of them. Sam Taylor (Lord Foppington) had a wordy script, beautiful costumes and the job of feigning fainting fits. It was a tremendous performance. The character played by Chris Donovan (John, the Squire’s manservant) appeared in Act 2 and did not have too many lines but delivered them, and in particular the clever “asides”, with impeccable timing. As beautiful as were the Lord’s costumes, the ladies’ dresses were very well chosen.
The set was simple - mainly table and seating - but effective. Scene changes were smooth and the lighting uncomplicated. I personally loved the choice of the Mozart piano music used for the evening.
Congratulations to all involved with the production. The long and hearty applause at the end of the show said it all.
