The Chimes

February 2016

Writer: Barry Syder (adapted from Charles Dickens' novel)

Director: Kathryn Attwood

Venue: The Causeway Barn, Horsham

In February 2016 Lights & Bushels presented a new adaptation of Charles Dickens' The Chimes. Not as well known as his other "Christmas" novels (The Chimes is actually set on New Year's Eve), the play introduced us to poor Trotty Veck, and some of the characters he meets on the last day of the year - including the spirits of the chimes! Written by Barry Syder, the play was performed in the Causeway Barn and featured recordings of the bells of St Mary's Church.

Audience comments about Lights & Bushels' exciting and innovative adaptation of Charles Dickens' The Chimes:

"Despite a wet and cold February evening, The chimes was a sell-out, and the packed and appreciative audience spoke volumes for just how far Lights and Bushels' reputation has grown in its short life. Well done everyone for another great performance!"

"Congratulations to everyone involved in "The Chimes". It was atmospheric and the characters were interesting and well-acted. I really liked "The Chimes" themselves - gratifyingly creepy! I thought the script was really good too and just the right length. Above all we felt we had had an entertaining and enjoyable night out seeing something a bit different. Thank you."

"Well done Lights and Bushels ! Well done Kathryn Attwood and the cast - well directed and strong performances. Lights hiding under bushels are shining brightly !!"

" I thought it was a beautifully acted piece. Every character stood out with an impressive performance. Very atmospheric and witty, yet at times heart breaking! I welled up at one point and an amateur production has never made me do that. However I shouldn't use the word amateur because the whole production came across incredibly professional. Kathryn and Barry have produced another gem and I hope Lights and Bushels continues to go from strength to strength. A superb play due to its outstanding writing, direction and acting. Thank you for a insightful night."
